GitHub Universe 2025: Where developer innovation took center stage

At GitHub Universe 2025, one clear theme emerged: the ability to see, guide, and create across agents will have the most significant impact.

During GitHub Universe 2025, it became evident that the future lies in how we can visualise, direct, and construct using various agents. GitHub is reshaping the way developers and agents collaborate. As Kyle Daigle, GitHub’s Chief Operating Officer, pointed out on stage, we are stepping into “a new era of collaboration.” Agents are now essential to software development, managing tedious coding tasks so that developers can engage in complex problem-solving and more creative, impactful work. Developers have been pioneers in AI, demonstrating how agents can disrupt traditional roles, innovate processes, and scale our ability to create AI-driven solutions at an incredible pace.

GitHub is committed to every developer, regardless of the programming language they use or where they’re working, setting a standard for AI’s role in every business function. This year’s GitHub Universe was a celebration of coding and community, showcasing the variety of developer tools, control, and choices available. Our friends at GitHub unveiled important innovations aimed at building agent-based apps with top-tier security, scalability, and trust. With the introduction of Agent HQ—the unified platform for all agents—there’s a single command centre to assign, manage, and monitor multiple agents. Microsoft is playing a crucial role in accelerating this vision, providing the tools and infrastructure developers need to innovate rapidly. The rise of agents, first introduced at Microsoft Build, is speeding up our transformation. Leveraging the full potential of the Azure suite, agentic AI transcends mere productivity enhancement—it becomes a competitive edge.

Record-breaking growth and momentum

GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 report, launched this week, provides an insightful annual overview of software development trends, showcasing remarkable growth within the developer ecosystem:

  • Over 180 million developers are actively using GitHub.
  • Almost 80% of newcomers to GitHub try Copilot within their first week.
  • 630 million projects on GitHub, with an increase of 121 million in 2025—its most successful year yet.
  • 1.12 billion contributions made to public and open-source repositories, marking a 13% increase year-on-year.
  • 4.3 million AI-related repositories, almost double since 2023.
  • TypeScript and Python are the top languages in 2025, driven by AI adoption.
Nearly 80% of new developers on GitHub use Copilot in their first week text.

These statistics highlight a global trend—developers are welcoming AI, open-source, and cloud-native technologies to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness. Here at Microsoft, we’re avid users of AI across various processes and workflows. In fact, nearly all of our engineers rely on GitHub Copilot in their daily tasks. Agents not only improve our speed and efficiency but also fundamentally change how we approach work.

This shift isn’t solely driven by large enterprises; startups are also leading the charge as AI and agentic workflows change how software is developed.

I collaborate with startups worldwide, creating innovative data and AI solutions. Daily, I witness how GitHub Copilot allows startups to operate with heightened efficiency, maximising their development resources and delivering quicker results. It greatly enhances both the quality of their work and their speed to market. GitHub Copilot has become the benchmark for the next generation of AI solutions.

This upcoming phase is all about empowering developers with greater autonomy, intelligence, and the infrastructure needed to unlock new opportunities. When developers excel, businesses prosper.

Microsoft Azure provides a comprehensive platform that combines AI-driven development tools, agents, and top-notch security, from cloud to edge. This human-centric approach to software delivery is tailored to help organisations accelerate, work smarter, and innovate confidently. Agents are revolutionising the entire development cycle by assisting developers with everything from bug fixes and documentation to code reviews and deployment to Azure, enabling them to focus on their true expertise: creativity.

  • You can effortlessly create and deploy AI agents from start to finish in Visual Studio Code using GitHub Copilot. The AI Toolkit for VS Code allows developers to explore models and build agents within their coding environment—providing evaluation and tracing all in one place. With the new prompt-first agent development, powered by GitHub Copilot and based on the Microsoft Agent Framework, developers can design, enhance, and launch production-ready agents quicker and more intuitively than before—all within their favourite code editor.
  • Azure MCP Server is now widely available, empowering your agents with cloud capabilities and redefining developer interactions with Azure. Built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), it creates a secure, standards-based connection between Azure services—such as AKS, ACA, App Service, Cosmos DB, SQL, AI Foundry, and Fabric—and AI-driven tools like GitHub Copilot. Imagine managing cloud resources, generating infrastructure-as-code, and fixing deployment issues—all via natural language directly from your preferred IDE or MCP-compatible client, following Azure best practices. Azure MCP Server accelerates innovation, minimizes context switching, and offers enterprise-level security and scalability. It’s not just a tool—it symbolises the future of intelligent cloud development.

The landscape of modern app development has entered a new era—where developers transition from merely writing code to orchestrating autonomous systems that comprehend and act on intent. During this week’s main stage presentation, Amanda Silver, Corporate Vice President and Head of Product for Apps and Agents at Microsoft, demonstrated how Microsoft and GitHub Copilot collaborate to support specification-driven development, Azure-context code generation, prompt-first agent creation, workflow orchestration, and operational excellence. Together, we are redefining how human creativity transforms into production-ready innovation.

Becoming frontier starts here

At Microsoft, we take pride in being part of this journey—providing the integration and infrastructure that enable agentic development for enterprises globally.

GitHub Universe 2025 wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a declaration. AI has now become an essential expectation in software development, with agentic workflows setting the new benchmark. With GitHub and Azure joining forces, we uniquely deliver the tools, platforms, and vision required for every developer to thrive.

We’re building this future alongside GitHub, our customers, our startup ecosystem, and the global developer community. When developers have the right tools, transformation isn’t a question of if—it’s about how quickly. When developers lead, innovation naturally follows.
