Classic LTI App Retirements, Preview of OneDrive LTI Migration Tool for Canvas
Microsoft is investing further in a streamlined, contemporary Microsoft 365 LTI experience. As part of this shift, a number of traditional Microsoft LTI applications will be phased out in September 2026.
This article covers:
- Which classic LTI applications are retiring and their timelines
- What will happen to existing course links and materials created using the retiring classic LTIs
- Steps you should take now to prepare and transition to Microsoft 365 LTI
- New migration tools available to aid in the transition
As previously announced in our Microsoft 365 LTI GA release Blog, the following classic Microsoft LTI applications will be retired on September 17, 2026:
- Microsoft OneDrive LTI (1.3)
- OneNote Class Notebook LTI (1.1)
- Microsoft Reflect LTI (1.3)
- Microsoft Teams Assignments LTI (1.3)
After September 17, 2026, any links or uses of these classic applications in your courses will become inactive. However, all files, notebooks, assignments, and check-ins created via these classic apps will remain accessible for copying and reuse.
New versions of these classic experiences are now offered through the unified Microsoft 365 LTI, built on the LTI® 1.3 Advantage standard. This new version brings enhanced security, simplified identity management via Microsoft Entra, and syncing of LMS enrolments and grades — all with a single deployment model for LMS admins. We’ll continue updating our migration guides as new tools and resources become available.
Attention Canvas LMS Users: We’re thrilled to introduce the Microsoft OneDrive LTI Migration Tool for Canvas, now available in Preview!
This tool makes it easier for institutions using Canvas LMS to migrate OneDrive content links from the older Microsoft OneDrive LTI app to the new Microsoft 365 LTI app, ensuring a smooth transition for educators and students.
For new preview deployments: You can find detailed deployment instructions in the Canvas migration guide, which has been updated with configuration steps and usage guidance for the migration tool.
If you were part of the private preview: If you’ve already deployed the OneDrive LTI Migration Tool in Canvas during the private preview, you don’t need to take any action. Your current setup will continue to function as part of the Public Preview and General Availability. If you tested it in a sandbox environment, we recommend following the new Canvas migration guide for your main environment.
Below you’ll find guidance to assist in transitioning from the other classic LTI applications and across additional LMS platforms. We will keep you updated as this guidance is refined.
- Implement Microsoft 365 LTI with the OneDrive app enabled, and direct educators on how to create file links or embeds within course content using the new Microsoft 365 LTI (Microsoft Education) menus.
- Consider disabling, hiding, or removing placements of the classic Microsoft OneDrive LTI application in your LMS, but avoid uninstalling or disabling the app.
- Remember, file links or embeds created with the classic Microsoft OneDrive LTI will cease functioning once the app is retired, so these need to be substituted for the new Microsoft 365 LTI (Microsoft Education) app before the retirement date.
The latest OneNote Class Notebook LTI 1.3 integration is now part of the Microsoft 365 LTI application, featuring automatic roster synchronisation and simpler setup.
- Implement Microsoft 365 LTI with the OneNote Class Notebook app enabled, and assist educators in using the updated app.
- Make sure to disable, hide, or remove the classic OneNote integration placements, but do not uninstall the app to circumvent any migration problems during the transition.
While there isn’t a direct migration pathway from OneNote Class Notebook LTI 1.1 to Microsoft 365 LTI Class Notebooks, educators can copy sections/pages from one notebook to another. This can be done through the right-click menu on Sections and Pages (select “Move/Copy”) in OneNote on Windows, OneNote Web, and OneNote for Mac. For instructions on transferring content using OneNote on Mac, iOS, or Android.
- Implement Microsoft 365 LTI with the Assignments app enabled, and show educators how to create assignments using the new app.
- As soon as you install the new Microsoft 365 LTI and enable the Assignments app, disable, hide, or remove placements of the old Teams Assignments LTI app, and guide users to replicate their existing assignments using the new app.
- Assignments made with the old LTI 1.3 app can be reused in the Microsoft 365 LTI Assignments experience (which does not require a Team).
- Assignments created in the LMS or using the Assignments app in Microsoft Teams can be copied and reused via the Create from Existing option in the Microsoft 365 LTI (Microsoft Education) assignment workflow.
- Implement Microsoft 365 LTI with the Reflect app enabled, and encourage educators to create new Reflects in the updated Microsoft 365 LTI experience.
- There is currently no migration route for reflects made with the classic Reflect LTI 1.3 app to the Reflect feature in the new Microsoft 365 LTI Reflect app.
- We highly recommend transitioning to the new Reflect experience in Microsoft 365 LTI as soon as you can, and to remove the classic app before the retirement date on September 17, 2026.
