Microsoft named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Server Virtualization Platforms
We are excited to announce that Microsoft has been recognised as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Server Virtualization Platforms. This accolade comes at a crucial time for enterprise infrastructure. It’s no longer just about selecting a hypervisor; the focus has shifted to how to establish a uniform operating model that spans cloud, data centre, edge, and sovereign environments. Microsoft tackles this challenge with two key approaches: operational consistency via Azure and Azure Arc, and infrastructure consistency through Hyper-V.

Transitioning from selecting a hypervisor to defining an operating model
For many years, organisations primarily focused on which hypervisor to use for their virtualisation needs. Nowadays, a far more significant consideration is how to operate infrastructure across all the environments essential to a business. While virtualisation is still a vital component, the platform’s value increasingly hinges on effective management, governance, security, updates, and connectivity across various settings. As infrastructure diversifies, the methods of operation become just as crucial as the locations where it functions.
Microsoft ensures this level of consistency through two key elements:
- Operational consistency: Azure offers unified management, governance, and security across cloud, data centres, and edge environments. Azure Arc extends these capabilities, allowing organisations to seamlessly manage diverse infrastructure.
- Infrastructure consistency: Hyper-V serves as a standard virtualisation layer across Azure, Azure Local, and Windows Server, ensuring organisations maintain a cohesive infrastructure wherever workloads are processed.
These integrated layers enable organisations to retain flexibility without complicating operational models. Workloads can transition across environments, adapt, and embrace new technologies without the need for a distinct operational model for each setting.
Prepared for future challenges
The importance of operational and infrastructure consistency will amplify as AI continues to transform enterprise IT. Models, agents, applications, and data are increasingly shared across cloud, data centre, edge, and sovereign environments. Relying solely on AI will not eliminate the complexities of a distributed infrastructure; in fact, it may heighten the demand for robust management, governance, security, and foundational infrastructure.
Being recognised as a Leader in this Magic Quadrant is a privilege for us. More crucially, we see this as indicative of the direction many organisations are heading: striving for operational consistency within more complex distributed environments. We remain dedicated to assisting our customers in balancing the flexibility to operate workloads wherever they wish with the necessary consistency to manage everything as a unified system.
