Winning my first hackathon feels surreal. I decided to join the Microsoft Agents League AISF Hackathon just as my exams were approaching. As a law student, the timing was less than ideal, especially since it clashed with my study schedule. Balancing exam prep with project creation felt overwhelming, given the pressures of schoolwork and multiple deadlines.

While I navigated through textbooks, notes, and slides, I noticed a recurring issue: understanding a topic often required combing through numerous resources. It wasn’t just me; many students faced a similar struggle. The materials—PDFs, lecture notes, past questions—were available, but knowing how to utilise them effectively was another story. I was in need of a solution.

I envisioned a tool that would help students engage with their own study materials rather than just summarising them. I wanted something that could clarify complicated topics with simple explanations, transform content into memorable stories, offer practice questions, provide feedback, and ultimately create a useful revision document.

The Birth of StudyMate AI: Study with Matey

Thus, StudyMate AI: Study with Matey was born. Initially, it seemed like just another study tool. However, as I delved deeper into the project, I realised it had the potential to be much more. I wanted to integrate gamified elements and introduce a friendly study companion, Matey, who would guide students through their learning rather than leaving them to figure everything out on their own.

Recognising that exams often assess understanding rather than simple recall, I sought to design scenarios for students to learn through. For instance, a law student could grasp legal concepts by tackling hypothetical client issues, while a medical student might engage in diagnosing a fictional patient using principles they’ve learnt, and engineering students could propose solutions relevant to their field.

The Development Process

Creating this tool wasn’t straightforward. The initial version was cumbersome and overloaded with features that I believed students would find helpful. Performance was sluggish, so I had to refine my approach to streamline the process while maintaining its effectiveness.

To improve efficiency, I adopted a new method: instead of sending uploaded notes to a database for agents to comb through—as is typical—I opted to store the extracted text as a wiki. This innovative shift, inspired by Andrej Karpathy’s ideas, significantly reduced latency and processing time, allowing for direct connections between related concepts.

A key design goal was accuracy. I didn’t want StudyMate to fabricate facts, cases, or exam content when there were reliable materials available. To ensure this, I implemented a Foundry IQ retrieval adapter. When configured with the right credentials, StudyMate pulls relevant content from the designated endpoint; in demo mode, it defaults to local wiki pages for testing without revealing sensitive information.

Reflecting on the Experience

Building with diverse Microsoft tools was initially daunting yet ultimately enjoyable. It was truly rewarding to transform a personal challenge into a functional product. When I learned that StudyMate AI: Study with Matey had been crowned the Creative Apps winner at the hackathon, it felt incredible. This achievement not only boosted my confidence in my ability to innovate but also underscored the importance of addressing real-life problems through constructive solutions.
