Partner Case Study | Copeland

Copeland is widely recognised for providing the essential hardware that keeps our everyday lives on track. Their scroll compressors and HVACR technologies quietly manage the heating and cooling of buildings, while also safeguarding temperature-sensitive items in supermarkets, retail chains, and various other sectors. However, within the company, a smaller team operates with a different focus. The Software Solutions team, including engineers, develops and oversees cloud platforms that monitor, control, and analyse equipment in the field. This has a much more modern SaaS vibe compared to the traditional manufacturing side of things.

One notable platform is Connect+, which Copeland utilises to oversee and manage refrigeration controllers in grocery stores and large retail environments. Here, uptime is crucial for food safety and efficient operations. As Brian Haggard, the Technical Director for Software Solutions at Copeland, explains, Connect+ supports “the controllers that you see in big box retailers,” particularly those long aisles filled with frozen and refrigerated products.

After Copeland became an independent entity following its divestiture from Emerson Electric, the team faced a pressing challenge. Connect+ was operating on Emerson’s Global Data Center, which was on the verge of being shut down. “The entire thing was being sunset,” Haggard clarifies, “We had to move.”

However, Copeland’s approach was not merely about relocating their infrastructure. They seized the opportunity to modernise Connect+ and create an operating model built for scalability, security, and reliability using Azure. This process included migrating the Connect+ customer environment and application workloads from on-site operations to Azure. Following this, they embarked on a more extensive initiative known internally as Connect+ 2.0.
