SharePoint AI page authoring: Select, describe, and refine
Enhancing your SharePoint pages has never been easier. Instead of needing to pinpoint where content sits on the page, authors can now simply select a section or web part and instruct Copilot on the changes they wish to make.

In the past, authors had to detail both the content they wanted to modify and its specific location on the page. With the new on-canvas selection feature, the context of the location is automatically included. You can simply choose a web part or section and express your desired outcome. The selected item is highlighted within the Copilot interface, providing clear context for your instructions.
- Make precise edits. Click on an image or any other element and ask Copilot to move or modify it.
- Reorganise a section. Select a section and request a different column arrangement; Copilot can handle the components within it seamlessly.
- Implement wider updates. Direct Copilot to change recurring content across the entire page, like updating a product or brand name in both text and supported web parts.
- Examine the changes. The updated areas are clearly marked on the canvas, allowing you to review the alterations before going live.
The page is still constructed using native SharePoint components, enabling you to continue using familiar page authoring tools at any point.
No special command syntax is required! Just describe the outcome as you would when talking to a colleague. Copilot combines the selected context and your request, allowing for simple instructions like “move this to the centre column” or “change this into a two-column layout.”
Suggested prompts can give you a head start, while follow-up options can assist you in further refining the page. However, always ensure you review the entire page for accuracy, verify links and facts, check for accessibility issues, and preview the final result before publication.
Picture updating a promotional page for a product launch. You can select the section containing the promotional material and instruct Copilot to refresh the messaging for the latest version. The selected context aids Copilot in understanding exactly where the changes should be implemented.
For those new to page authoring, Copilot diminishes the need to become familiar with every SharePoint web part or configuration option before diving in. For seasoned authors, it streamlines repetitive edits and larger updates across the page. In both cases, you remain in charge of the final review and can decide when to publish.
This feature is being gradually rolled out across Microsoft 365, and availability will differ based on tenant and release ring. Organisations must have Copilot enabled in SharePoint, and authors will need editing permissions. Our team is actively investigating reusable skills for editing mode: natural-language shortcuts that could package a series of repeatable page authoring actions. Eventually, a skill could help an organisation maintain a consistent page structure or convert source content into a page using a set of easy-to-follow instructions. When this feature becomes available in your tenant, open a page in edit mode, activate Copilot, choose a web part or section, and describe the outcome you’re aiming for. Begin with a specific change, evaluate what Copilot updates, and then build upon that.
