Spin Up MongoDB Atlas Clusters in Azure (Preview)

Your data management has just become more accessible. Now, you can effortlessly create MongoDB Atlas projects and set up clusters straight from the Azure portal, which is the same interface you use to manage the rest of your cloud environment.

This enhancement builds on the general availability of MongoDB Atlas as an Azure Native Integration. Previously, you could establish an Atlas organization through Azure and manage billing via the Azure Marketplace. Now, this process extends to the very core of your application: the cluster.

An Atlas Project is like a container that holds clusters and relevant resources within your Atlas organisation. Feel free to create one for every app, team, or environment and then deploy clusters into it.

An Atlas cluster is a fully managed MongoDB deployment in the cloud. It’s where all your data resides, along with its scaling, replication, backups, and the ability to handle every read and write operation your application requires.

Getting the right configuration for your cluster is crucial for transforming a project into a reliable production-ready application:

• Performance & scale – select a tier that suits your traffic needs, from free trials to high-demand dedicated workloads.

• Data residency – the Azure region you select for your cluster will determine where your data is stored, keeping you compliant with regulations.

• Resilience – clusters include backups and you can easily check their health status.

• Organisation – clusters are housed within projects, giving you well-defined boundaries for teams, environments, and applications.

• Create and view Atlas projects from your MongoDB Atlas resources.

• Deploy clusters – select Free (M0), Flex or dedicated M10 / M30 tiers.

• Choose the Azure region where each cluster’s data will be stored.

• View cluster details: check the MongoDB version, region, tier, backups, and health state.

• Keep billing unified under your existing Azure Marketplace plan.

If you already have a MongoDB Atlas resource set up in Azure, you’re just four clicks away from running a cluster:

• Open your MongoDB Atlas resource in the Azure portal (search under All resources if you can’t find it).
• In the service menu, select Projects (preview), then click on + Create project and give it a unique name.
• Open the project and in the Clusters section, select + Create Cluster.
• Choose a tier, enter a cluster name and Azure region, then select Create. It’s as easy as that – your cluster will be deployed.

Don’t have an Atlas resource yet?

Search for MongoDB Atlas in the Azure portal and create one against your subscription before following the above steps. Ensure you have the Owner role on the Atlas organization to create projects and clusters.
